New Home Project, catching up the last 3 months

Hello all,
Yes I'm still alive, just haven't posted in 3+ months.  Why? Well, I started a new career, and it's summer in ATX, and I have spent most moments at home just sleeping, traveling or doing some reading.  In the last few months I have read a Gladwell (What the Dog Saw), a modern Christian ethics book (A Generous Orthodoxy), a book about the history of Maine lobster fisherman (The Lobster Coast), and I just started "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang"..... I know, I'm all over the place.  Blake has been living with us this summer which has been a blast.  And he has turned the garage into his art studio, so next time any of you are by the house we will have several new paintings on the walls.  I have also been doing a ton of home projects.  Linz and I finally have a total "vision" on the house, and hopefully we will start pulling it all together soon.  So below are a few pics of the latest job, the fence.  Oh first you need to understand that re-doing the fence was necessary after Abby made The Great Puppy Escape of 2011 by pushing through a rotten board while we were in the Caymans and ran through the neighborhood like a wild banshee until the neighbors all helped corral her.  Ok, so here are the pics.

First the inspiration.

Then the Nick of the Day.

Then the Before
(actually the neighbors fence, I didn't take a before of mine, but it looked the same)

The During

The Finish

Well, I think it turned out pretty good.  I guess the only way to know if it will work is to turn the dog loose and see how long it takes her to get out.  Oh well.  Best wishes.  Thanks for the read.

July just flew by!

Not many posts in July.  In my defense we did go out of town for 8 days and I have been working a lot(like 50-60 hrs a week), but that hasn't really been the only reason the posts have been lacking.  To be honest I'm just not really sure which way to go with this blog.  And maybe that's ok.  Most of the other blogs I follow really have a certain purpose or direction, but I get kind of bored trying to focus on any one thing.  So in true random post fashion.....

Am I one Lindsey away from being a hippie????

No I mean it,  Linz and I talked about it on Saturday.

Cars- I would really be ok just taking my bike, a bus, or a scooter.

House- I switched us to wind energy; I don't like throwing anything away; I try to reuse every board, screw and nail I can possibly salvage; I recycle EVERYTHING(I have now brought cardboard home from work so I can recycle it); I asked Linz if we could drop our cable; and I think our next house should be smaller than the one we have now.

Food- We do mostly organic foods and most of our grocery shopping at a smaller co-op(Sprouts).  I have drastically cut down my overall meat intake,  I try to go 5 days a week with out eating any meat and if I do I try to eat fish or chicken(if someone has already bought it I will eat it, it doesn't make any sense to waste it).  Why??? well meat is expensive, most animals are treated poorly, and all those animals are hard on the environment.

I could go on but all this is making me just sound cheap.  Well, mostly cheap with a little "do something good for the planet" sprinkled in.  Ok, so maybe not a hippie, but it is a good thing that I have Linz to keep me balanced.  I know, I know I should just take it easy.  My online quiz I just took rated me as a 58% hippie(take it for yourself).  So I think I am ok for now.

Still don't have any idea what this blog will become but I'm going to stop worrying about that and just write about whatever is swimming around in my head.  I will also do my best to post about twice a week, maybe Tuesdays and Fridays???? Here are a few of the topics I've been working on.  Is the DVR ruining TV? What are the differences btw Dallas and Austin?(recent trip recap included) A different way to look at immigration.  Renting vs Buying.  Book review Super Freakonomics and Freakonomics.  Maine trip recap.

Thanks for the read.

Using all my time

This year is already more than half over and it seems to be flying by. I have been doing a lot of soul searching lately; trying to figure out the best way to use my time, wanting to set meaningful goals, and trying to make the most of every day. I wish there were some easy rules or guides that you just do x,y,z and.... well, it all leads to something worthwhile. This is not a "I don't know what I want to do" post, its a "how do I enjoy all the steps along the way" post. So here are some of the thoughts I have been working on.
Time. Time is the great equalizer, we all only get so much of it, and we rarely know how much. Time is also an illusion, why else does it fly by when things are great but drag along when we do things we don't enjoy? But all that said, I think it can be really useful to help us make our decisions. So I've come up with some pseudo-scientific way to judge my time use.
1. 60 hrs. Here is the deal, I think each one of us has about 60 hrs each week to do productive things with. Once you take out sleeping, eating, paying bills...... and once you factor in some rest and relaxation time you have about 60 hrs left. If you work a 40 hr a week job that leaves you with only about 20 hrs to do other things. So I have to ask myself how to get the most out of that time. (Currently I am trying to spend about 16 hrs at an investment property and the other 4 hrs exercising) So if I want to hit those time goals I have to structure my days.
2. Double use the time you have. So audio books while I commute and brown-bagging it so I can run errands during lunch. If I can accomplish multiple things at once, it's like finding extra hours in the day.
3. Planning shopping trips. I used to go to Home Depot before doing a project and buy only what I needed for that day. That meant driving back if I forgot something or when something broke. Now I only go to the Depot if I am buying the stuff for at least 3 projects/days worth of work. That way if I hit a snag I can just move on to something else. No more wasting 2-3 hours every weekend just to get a 3 hour project done.
4. Using the time-test. Basically, you just ask yourself "is what I am doing going to stand the test of time?" The longer an event or a decision is talked about or has an affect, the more valuable and important it is. So, at the end extreme of this would be the day I was married or our honeymoon. That is stuff that we will talk about for the rest of our lives. Quality time spent with my wife would also fall into this category so would the trips we take and time with our family. Now, the opposite end is the stuff that doesn't matter in a few days or weeks. The TV shows I watch are a great example of this. When we go on vacation and don't watch TV for a week, it makes 0 difference in my life. Another is junk food, I could eat at home most nights and then a few nights go out to some really great restaurant. I bet you can't remember the junk food you ate in June, but you could still remember a great meal you had at a new place in town.

I didn't mean for this to become some "how-to" post or make it seem like I have all this stuff figured out. But writing it down makes it all more real to me and I think it will help me follow through more often. Besides, one of the great things about blogging/writing is how it allows you to think things through and realize what you really want to say.

Easy changes to be more green

response to original post which is here
Just wanted to give everyone an update to some easy changes we've been making to be a little more green.
1. Just changed my power bill to 100% wind energy.  It actually saved us 25% since we were on a month to month plan.  It was only 2/10ths of a cent more than the cheapest traditional power plan so how could I not?
Yearly savings $300-$350
2. Signed up for curb-side recycling.  Almost half of our weekly "garbage" can be easily recycled.  All I had to do was call our trash company.  They come to pick it up for the first time tomorrow.
Yearly cost $48
3. Last month I started taking a sack lunch to work 4 days a week(I let myself go out for a long lunch 1 day a week wherever I want).  Fast food isn't very healthy and all those bags and containers end up in the landfill.  Plus it gives me more down time during my lunch break since I am no longer wasting half my time driving to lunch places and back.  Of course I'm saving money too.
Yearly savings $500-$600
So there you have it.  3 easy changes.
Yearly differences: net $750-900 in savings, 50-60 fewer trash bags in the landfill, and all our electricity will come from renewable sources.  More changes to come so I'll keep everyone posted.
