Austin City Coucil Weighs Apple Subsidies

The Austin city council is debating whether to give millions of dollars to Apple so that they will bring more business here.  In return for the subsidies, the council claims Apple will generate thousands of jobs.  Which really means all of us locals will have to pay higher property taxes so that Apple won’t have to pay any.  The council argues it’s a cheap way to generate jobs.  The opponents say that those jobs were going to come anyway.  The real question is whether the government should have the right to offer these subsidies.  Why should they get to decided?  Is it right to give Apple a 8 million dollar property tax break and at the same time be slashing school budgets which are funded by property taxes?  It’s probably easy to fire a faceless teacher who you will never meet and in return, the chance to wine and dine the Apple exec’s.  Maybe you say that isn’t a fair way to look at it.  And maybe it isn’t.  But you still have to ask the question.  You could argue that if you cut back everyone’s property taxes, we all would have more money to spend, and that spending would spur the economy (isn’t this why conservatives always want tax breaks?)  When it really boils down to it the thing that frustrates me is the web of taxes and subsidies that make it impossible to know where everything is going… or why we need them.  And I’m not saying it’s wrong, I just want to have the ability to decide.  Put it on a ballot (of course that’s a whole other can of worms, I know the system isn’t perfect) and just have it say “Every property owner in Austin will pay an additional $100 in 2012 to Apple Computers so that they will build a call center here.”  If it gets approved then I can’t blame anyone but the man in the mirror.  I know it’s over simplistic, but it would be nice to get the chance to decide.  Instead of a group of "all-knowing" goobs who get to spend our money in what ever way they see fit.

I need to do a race / ride. Help!

Ok readers.  I need some help.  I used to do a handful of events every year.  Mostly to give my self an excuse to work out and drop a few lbs.  But here we are staring April in the face and I have done nothing.  Even worse I have nothing on the calender.  I just looked up the Shiner Gasp and...... it's 100 miles and it's in 5 weeks.  So unless I just go nuts..... possible..... probably not going to happen.  Bob (or is it Fred?) is trying to talk me into doing a tri at the end of May and that's a maybe.  But whatever it is, I really need it.  I guess by putting out the request I'm really just forcing myself to pick something.  I'll let you know what it is, maybe some training posts, maybe some event posts as long as Linz doesn't take any that are too embarrassing.

Boo Dat!

Let me get this straight.  A bunch of guys who get paid millions of dollars to hit people are being punished for having a thousand dollar side bet as to who can hit someone the hardest or first.  As if there wasn't any incentive before to make big hits.  You know, getting on ESPN highlights, or getting voted to the pro-bowl, or getting endorsement deals for being such a hard hitter.

But, but.... it's a bounty.... those are illegal...you need to set an example for the kids.

Right, the kids in high school who get a sticker on their helmet for big hits, get the game ball, get selected for all-district, and get college scholarships for hitting hard.

Or the kids in college who get a sticker on their helmet, get on ESPN, get on the all-conference team, and get the attention of NFL scouts for hitting hard.

Yes.... those kids.

It's not like these were cheap shots or out of bounds hits.  They were all legal hits.

What if this was boxing, "ok champ, I know you got paid $8 million dollars for this fight, but here is an extra thousand if you can knock him out instead of going to the cards, but don't tell anyone, this is a super duper secret"  How stupid did that sound.  OH!  But for the kids...... It's better for the young boxers to learn to go the distance.....

Every single one of those defensive players in the hall of fame got there by having big, memorable hits.  So what is it really all about?

Money, money, and ........ money

That's it.  If you don't get it, you aren't paying attention.

Money.  The league is getting sued by former players right now due to lack of concussion controls.  They want this to be in the record, that once they "knew of this travesty" they punch that team in the throat.

Money.  They are doing everything they can to protect offensive players.  They score the points.  They sell the TV deals.  Fans like touchdowns.  Fans like their starting QB's.  The league wants defensive players to think twice about a big hit on a celebrity athlete.  That's why you can only hit the QB above the knees, below the shoulders, and not to hard unless you want a bounty investigation.  In fact most refs could probably go ump a ball game right afterwards since the QB hit zone is only slightly smaller than the strike zone.

Hey, the Saints knew the rules.  They broke them.  They are getting punished.  But there is no logic behind the reason being given.  Be honest, we are all big boys, we can handle the truth.

Tebow to the Jets

The sports talk guys all say Tebow is a polarizing figure.  That you either love him or hate (hate may be a bit strong its more of a disdain) him.  They say he will never be a NFL quarterback because he can't make the throws.  But if you owned a team that isn't winning anyway, what difference does it make.  Sure you want your team to win, it makes you feel successful, it can lead to post season appearances, which leads to more exposure and more money.  But if you don't have the ability to win anytime soon.  Getting Tebow on your team still gives most of the above things.  It puts people in the seats, it gets people watching the games on TV, it's really a great bang for the buck.  Whether he is great or terrible, people will be beating down your doors to watch.  Does he bring division and possibly break up your locker room... Maybe, but losing in front of half-full stadiums breaks up a locker room a lot faster.  These guys are professionals, not kids.  They are cashing checks either way.

Bottom line.  He makes you money and he is a good guy.  Will he be a hall of fame quarterback, no.  Does that matter, no.  There are 26 other QB's in the league who aren't going to the hall either.  Who knows, maybe he plays another 3 seasons, gets a job in the front office, and marries your granddaughter.  Sounds like a win, win, win to me.

Santa Fe

Linz, Ash, the baby Bo’s and I spent 5 days last week in stunning Santa Fe.  I have never been there before that I can remember (maybe drove though on the way to skiing 15+ years ago?).  I was shocked by the beautiful sweeping views, the majestic mountain peaks, and the ridiculously delicious food.  It really was an especially great trip for me combining historical sites, churches, scenery, and FOOD.  So I was in heaven while we were there.

Red chili sauces? or  Green chili sauces? Both please! Oh and 2 extra tamales for the road.
The food is also mostly local sourced and organic.  In fact, if you wanted to find non-organic coffee, you had to go to Starbucks.  Speaking of coffee, which if you know me is one of my addictions; they have this amazing local styled coffee where they blend in roasted pine nuts along with the beans.  Unique, smooth, and nutty (actually drinking some right now).
We drove lots of places, from Albuquerque up to Taos.  Saw lots of sites, from Tent Rock National up to the Rio Grande Gorge.  Went to the site of 2 different miracles, the Loretto Stairs and the Chimayo Dirt.  Had tons of fun with those Bo babes in the snow.  All in all, a great time in northern New Mexico.  Enjoy.

They funny rock shapes go all the way up the mountain.  The ones on top still have boulders on their peaks.
Chimayo Church with the Holy Dirt.  The walls are lined with people crutches, canes, and casts that they left there after being miraculously healed.  Really cool place.
The Bo babies first "real" snow.  The few flakes that fall in Austin once every 3 years dosn't count.

Santa Fe's Farmer's Market is amazing.  It puts the ones in Austin to shame.  So much variety and delicious food.

Espana! pt 7

Madrid
Madrid is the modern day Spanish capital.  It’s big, sprawling, crowded, and fast paced.  I’ll be honest and say that Madrid was neat to see, but didn’t really strike a chord with either of us.  It isn’t a very old city and so lacked many of the historical sites that I love.  Its wide streets and high rise buildings didn’t have much of the charm that Linz loves.  But, it does have 2 amazing art galleries, the Prado, and the Modern Art Museum.  Both where filled with incredible art and well worth a half day each of exploring.  Our favorite thing in Madrid was the park.  It’s very similar to central park only with more walk ways and artistic flare.  On our last day we settled in for a much needed nap under one of the trees.  Between the park and the museum was the book district, which is really just vendor after vendor selling books on every imaginable thing from hundreds of years old to new releases.  Madrid is just so big.  Most sites are miles apart and not blocks.  The subway system is older and doesn’t have enough stops to be useful inside the city.  We found out by the last day that the best thing to do is to take taxis.  For 7 euros you could be somewhere in 10 minutes instead of 45.  All that said, I’m really glad we went.  Enjoy.

Espana! pt 6

Rhonda

Rhonda to me is all about one thing…. the views.  We rented a mini and drove about 3 hrs out from Seville, winding around mountains, pastures, and beautiful lakes.  The town is small and not all that busy.  Just a few tour buses full of people here and there.  Rhonda is the birth place of modern bullfighting and has a bullring that hasn’t changed in hundreds of years.  When you walk into it you feel like you are in a scene in Gladiator and you wonder just how many people have met their end right where you are standing.  Of course we came to Rhonda to see the bridge and the gorge.  I know I sound like a broken record saying the pics do no justice, but once again it is as true as before.  The gorge can only be described as jaw-dropping.  It is hard to believe anyone thought to build, or knows how to build, a stone bridge like this.   Enjoy.
The bridge connects the "old" town to the "new" town

Espana! pt 5

Seville

Seville is another great Spanish city with lots of history and character.  It took its turn as the Spanish capital back in the days of new world exploration.  Its main cathedral is the “do not miss” sight while you are there.  The city is flat and very walkable.  Every night about an hour before sunset the whole city goes on a stroll around the main plazas and the shopping district.  The streets get crowded full of families, performers, children, grandparents, and tourists as the sunset colors the city in a magical hue.  We stayed in a hotel in the old Jewish quarter where the streets are narrow and the sounds of Spanish guitar and flamenco fill the evening air.  Seville is also famous for holding on to the tradition of bullfighting and there are still about a dozen fights per year.  We weren’t in town on the right day to go, but we did find an amazing vintage poster in one of the shops.  My favorite thing in Seville was the inside of the cathedral.  It claims to be the largest in the world although I’m not sure if it is by height, volume, sq ft, etc…. but it’s huge either way and breath-taking on the inside.  My pics do it no justice, but I had to try.  Enjoy.
The cathedral is massive and is the center point of the city

Alhambra pt 2
The sheer volume of pictures forced me to have a 2nd post on the Alhambra.  We spent about 4 hours there and we still didn’t see half of it.  Linz could have left me there for a full day and I would have been happy as a clam.  But it’s probably better I didn’t see it all.  It leaves some for me to dream about and wish to see some day.  Enjoy.

Espana! pt 3

The Alhambra will need to have its own post.  Just due to the sheer volume of pics I need to dig through and in order to keep my time on the blog to 20 min.  The Alhambra was the last Muslim holdout in Spain and the seat of the Muslim Governor.  Who was really more like a king.  So the Alhambra is part palace, part fortress, and part mosque with beautiful gardens and awe-inspiring courtyards.  Every inch of the palace is covered in intricate carvings.  It's not only huge, but the whole place is above the town and has spectacular views.  Below are just a few pics and they do it no justice.  Hope you enjoy.

I'm cutting it off there.  I guess there will have to be an Alhambra pt 2
